Taking the Plunge into Music

Yup. I’m going to do it!

I’m going to buy an acoustic guitar!

I’ve made up my mind (and, surprisingly, have the funds to spare XD) and I’m going to buy an acoustic guitar tomorrow, after I’ve enrolled my Master’s degree. I’ll be passing by a local musician’s mecha in Manila, and I’m thinking of stopping over and trying a few of them before I head home. I’m looking particularly at Sta. Mesa, where a local family of guitar makers (The Lumanogs) are still there plying their craft. Although I have read in some reviews that you really have to test the guitars yourself to see which one “feels” better for you.

There are other music shops that I’m also considering, and some online shops as well, like and Lazada (yes, they sell guitars online), but like I said, you have to feel the guitars by yourself to choose the best one that suits your style and comfort.

But still, I am going to do it! And if I’m able to do it, I can finally cross “learning how to play a guitar” off my bucket list. XD

Guitar help anyone?

Okay, so here’s the thing…

I still haven’t bought a guitar… even though I’ve been ranting about it all the frickin’ time.

Maybe I’m just daunted. I can’t even play my ukulele decently (I keep forgetting chords to songs, and I’m totally tone deaf when it comes to music, it seems), and now I’m hoping to make the transition to guitar. I mean, I’m sure a lot of people say that it would’ve been better transition FROM guitar to ukulele to get a better feel of the changes in chords, but I have to admit, I bought the uku on a whim to play “Creep”by Radiohead like Amanda Palmer does (I still love her, though).

So question time…

Is it too late for me to learn guitar?

I have really short fingers, I’m practically tone deaf and I can’t remember chords for sh*t… but I really want to learn.

Or maybe I should stick to using a korg padkontrol and make MIDI songs instead? I’ll end up making MIDI remixes of Dragon Age soundtracks. XD

I. Swear. To. God. I feel like I’m the only one in my family without any sense of music or tone AT ALL.

Ugh… this makes me so sad.

And I still have an assignment with my Statistics subject (and I suck at math!).

I guess I’d better stick to studying. I think I’m better at that than music anyway. XD

Music Frustrations… 2

I’ve already accepted that I would never be good with a guitar…

And then all of the sudden, I hear this.

Argh, damn you and your brilliance, Joe Petrucci!

Ugh, this is horrible. I ended up buying a couple of picks, a capo and was in a brink of buying a cheap guitar tremolo for my brother’s guitar.. Of course I could use them for my uku… but still the urge to frustrate myself with guitar lessons nag my head.

This is so frustrating.

I went to a local music store to try on guitars and my short, stubby fingers can’t even reach a simple C chord. How frustrating is that?! HONESTLY!

*smacks head* Maybe I should just end my frustration and at least TRY to learn a guitar song… just one, at least. And then that’s when I’ll decide if it’s worth the calloused fingers.

Okay, okay. I’m gonna try now. Don’t hate me if I fail at it though. T_T

Music Frustrations

I. Suck. At. Music.

I already know that I’m not that good on the ukulele, and then all of the sudden I hear this song, and I get the urge to learn guitar.

Or at least learn to read sheet music. I dread how the guitar rifts of this song look like on a sheet music.

I think it’s because at my age, I never really did know what other sort of potential I might have… although I’m seriously thinking music isn’t my thing. Maybe I should try painting? Personally, I think everyone should at least discover one art form that they want to do. I already tried my hand at dance (or bellydance) and music (or the ukulele at least). I should try visual arts next, like painting.

Doesn’t mean I can’t buy a guitar though… maybe I should look for a guitar and an amplifier … if I still suck at music, I can just sell it and get an easel and paints. XD

*Sigh*… Damn you, DragonForce, for making a musically-talentless person like me want to learn the guitar. ~_~

Level Up to Guitar?

I’ve been thinking…

All this playing with my ukes is making me want to try playing the guitar.

Or maybe I’m just being ambitious again. XD

I’m really happy with my ukus, but sometimes I have a really hard time playing sad and dark songs. And I really want to play some of those songs too. I’m thinking that I should get Lower G strings or just get a guitar.

My nephew, Cholo, recently got an awesome looking Fender Acoustic Guitar, that came complete with a pick-up. It is a monster mainly because of it’s price tag, but also from it’s size. My teeny tiny hands can’t play properly on it. T_T

However, I have been seeing some smaller scale guitars that might be good for children, and probably for small fingered people like myself. Maybe I should buy one of those?

I’ll stick to my ukus. I’ll just get the Lower G strings when they become available.

From Ukulele to Acoustic Guitar?

I am actually thinking of buying an Acoustic Guitar… probably just a cheap one for the time being, not like the expensive ones.

It’s not that I don’t like the ukulele, I actually love it to bits. But the thing is, there are just some songs that don’t sound good on the Ukulele… like the “Huling El Bimbo”. It’s such a good song, but I personally believe that the song should be played a little more hauntingly. The ukulele makes any song seem so light-hearted, so it does not go quite well for a song like “Huling El Bimbo”.

Anyway, I actually tried playing my college bestfriend’s Classical Guitar before… I sucked at it. Hahaha! But I am willing to do it now. Call me trying to find my musical talent, since I suck at singing.

It’s going to be while before I can buy an Acoustic Guitar. Hopefully I can make a video of me playing it, although I haven’t actually made a video of me playing Ukulele yet. ~_~

A Beginner’s Opinion on the Ukulele

Well, it’s official. My finger tips hurt so much.

Pressing buttons on my keyboard right now is utter torture… well, not that much torture. I think I still prefer practicing my ukulele rather than being pulled on a medieval rack or something.

So here it is. Since I am practically too old to Buy Orbeez toys and/ or find new play things, I’ve decided to follow the advice of my favorite female artist, Amanda Palmer, and buy me a ukulele instead.

Suprisingly, it is just as hard as playing a guitar. I tried getting a guitar lesson from my college friends once, and it was horrible. The metal strings hurt, I can’t do picking so much, and I keep getting all the notes wrong.

I guess this means I’m a much better dancer than a musician… even though I may be a little overweight. ~_~

I bought the ukulele on a whim from my devilishly-persuasive conscience (I didn’t even think it was that possible XD). I was very, very enthralled with Amanda Palmer’s version of Creep (as seen in my past post), and I really, really, really wanted to try it. And now that I have it, it turns out that it still takes a lot of work.

I mean, sure, it took me an hour to get a few chords right, but after that, putting a song together is tough, even with a copy of the tablatures are nearby. ~_~”

Or maybe it’s because my pinky finger is way too weak. Anybody got any idea how I can remedy this? My pinky finger feels like it’s all bone and no muscle to press hard into the string.

Not to mention my strumming sucks eggs. ~_~

Anyway, this does not mean I give up though. It might hurt like hell, but I am absolutely loving it. I love it as much as I love to bellydance… which I haven’t been doing for a few weeks now because my Gym ID got lost (huhuhu). I just need lots and lots of practice. I’m actually loving it because… well, it’s the first time I’ve been able to make any music at all at any musical instrument.

So, back to the tablatures! Once I’ve rested my finger tips, though. ~_~

*Yes, this is my sweet, darling, black ukulele, with it’s soft case, tuner and my clear book of ukulele songs*
