The Bellydance Obsession Returns

From Cellphone Photos
Yep, my obsession with belly dance returns.

It returned after I went to a local mall and saw a couple of Neena and Veena Instructional VCDs on sale (will take a picture of it once I get my Camera Phone fixed XD). I bought a couple of them (P100 a CD… whatta bargain!), and I’m hoping to be able to use it instead of letting it rot in my cabinet. Hahaha! It’s one of the hardest things about sharing your room with someone.

Anyway, after buying the VCDs, my obsession once again fixated on the Snakecharmer Lady, Rachel Brice. Sheesh, what I wouldn’t give to be able to move like her… what I wouldn’t give to have a body like hers, too. >_<

Darn our vanity obsessed society.

I really have no issues with bellydancing in public. The only issue I have when I dance are the silly, narrow-minded people who think that fluffy girls like me are not supposed to bellydance because it’ll cause our wobbly bits to jiggle. Just how silly and stupid is that? Quite frankly, if I were to choose between a thin bellydancer like Sonia or a fluffy girl like Hiba , I think I’d rather go for Hiba. No offense to Sonia fans, but sometimes, I feel like she’s dancing for the sake of the choreography rather than the music.

Even the Bellydance Superstars have an issue like this. I love them to bits, but still, one fluffy person can’t help but feel insecurity after watching them because all of them are so thin. They should have fluffy girls like Hiba dance with them once in a while. Also, it doesn’t help that previous “meaty” members of theirs are not on tour with them, like Bozenka and Dondi.

Anyway, I’ll be spending some time with these VCDs, plus I was able to buy this awesome MP3 player that straps to my arm. Heehee… time to take out my old bellydance coin belt!

Of Bellydancing

Oh, I haven’t told you about my biggest (or rather 2nd biggest… aside from food) passion, haven’t I?

Yep, as the title says, it’s bellydancing.

Now, I’m a fluffy girl… a very fluffy girl, and I became this confident because of bellydance. It’s a really wonderful dance for women, although a lot of men dance it, too (and they are SEXY!! XD). It’s a very empowering dance, especially for people like me who have a lot of insecurities about their body.

However, there’s this one very big misconception about bellydance that kind of makes me mad, and it’s the misconception that only skinny or sexy girls can do it. THAT IS SO NOT TRUE! Any woman (or man) in any shape, color or body type can do this. Look at me! I’m fluffy and jiggly all over, but I can do it (at a beginners level anyway XD).

My main inspirations for studying this dance are Sashi from Ascend Tribal Dance, and Rachel Brice of the Indigo Bellydance Group. I love them both so much… and yeah, all of this obsession with bellydance came from watching Gothic and Tribal Fusion Bellydance videos on YouTube (I swear, you can learn a lot from that site). I even got more inspired when someone interviewed Rachel Brice and said that she got into the dance from watching a 250 pound woman shaking her thing up from bellydancing. XD

After that, I discovered bellydance legends like Suhier Zaki, Tahia Carioca and Naima Akef, who were the pioneers of Egyptian Bellydance in movies. I also learned about Tribal Bellydance (Tribal Fusion BD’s roots) and saw Hahbi’ Ruh… and John Compton, who is the most awesome MALE Tribal bellydancer ever!

Anyway, I took a few lessons from a local gym from before, but they don’t teach Tribal Fusion BD, only the basics. Hopefully, if I continue to study, I’ll be able to at least dance like Sashi.

The only problem now is getting over stage fright once I decide to perform for an audience. XD
