Feral Kitteh

I recently saw this small kitten during my New Years vacation in Pangasinan.

For those who don’t know, a “feral” cat is a feline that has escaped domestication, meaning they haven’t been pets, or had left/abandoned human company. Most road kills on the streets (caused by careless human who can’t even step on their brembo brakes ~_~) are feral cats, having been left to fend for themselves on the streets without human interaction.

My nephew and I were lucky that this feral cat was more curious than aggressive, since most feral cats are typically violent and would often hiss and snarl at a human. Personally, I thought she (the cat) was more interested in the lure my nephew was playing with it. It was way too concentrated on it’s toy (and probably it’s reflection on my camera lens) to bother hissing at us.

One of our cats in the province, Muning, used to be a feral kitten. Luckily, my mother saw it’s mouse-catching capability that she adopted the cat in her small house in the Pangasinan. I saw Muning there, and though there’s a bit of “feral-ness” in her still (she’s not the type to be lap carried or cuddled), I was happy to see that she was still there. I just hope that all feral cats would have a home rather than end up as road kill. T_T

Pervert Frog

So, I was in Pangasinan for New Years, about to take my bath because I smelled of garlic and onions and barbeque smoke, when I came across little creature that looked like it had watched too much porn. O_o

Yep. That is a frog. Peeking from the sink. Watching me as I was about to take my bath. ~_~

As it turns out, the frog had several victims already, including my mom, my sister and several of my aunties. My mom said that the frog had been peeking at us for almost an hour.

It was actually kind of cute, actually, like one of those small, uhm… very wart-y, teddy bears. I would’ve taken a closer picture of it, but I was scared it might jump and land on me. ~_~

So I took my bath anyway, with this teeny, tiny frog watching me all the time. Luckily, it was a good frog, and stayed in that small hole during my bath. It left that night though, and I wasn’t able to take a picture of it again (too bad).

Roval And Me

I was watching “Marley And Me” a few moments ago, and it made me cry again. ~_~

Like serious-waterworks-from-the-eyes kind of crying.

Maybe because it’s because I miss my old German Shepherd, Roval, who died 4 years ago.

He was such an awesome dog, although he was quite a pain in the butt to walk, just like Marley. He would run, and chase cats and bark at other dogs that we were passing by. I mean, for those who ever owned like big dogs, you understand what I’m talking about. XD

But walking him, for me, was quite therapeutic. Sure, he was a dog, but whenever I sit down for a moment to rest and think things through, he was there sitting beside me. I’d talk about stuff, and even though I don’t know if he’d ever understand me, he was there looking at me with those puppy-dog eyes that made me feel like everything was going to be alright.

Anyway, I just miss having a dog again. My mom forbids it now, ever since Roval and one of our other dogs, Porkchop, died of diseases in an animal hospital.

I need a new pet. Maybe I should start thinking about keeping fish in my room. XD

Adopt-A-Pet, Save the Kittehs

I never really understood what people don’t like about kittehs… uhm, I mean cats.
I personally believe that they are the cutest things ever. They nice and warm and fluffy, plus they purr when they’re happy. They’ll catch mice for you and kill them (they’d even go after roaches!), you can feed them sardines and they’re happy, and if you just want to chill, they’ll curl up on your lap and let you pet them.

So why is that here, in the Philippines, so many cats (and ultimately, dogs) don’t have a home?

My parents, for example, totally hate cats. They said it’s because they breed to fast, their poop is stinky and they’re pretty much worthless.  Whenever they are stray kittens in our home, my parents would have them captured, places in a bag and thrown out the side of the road, where they will become strays, and sometimes even road kills.

I beg to differ. I happen to love cats.  I just wish I could have place of my own to adopt a lot of cats (yep, I ought to be a regular cat lady).

Luckily there are agencies like the Philippine Animal Welfare Society, who takes care of stray dogs and cats, nurse them back to health and soon have them adopted by people. PAWS’ extension, the PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (or PARC) is located in Katipunan, and it’s there where rescued animals are placed to be cared for by their vets, before releasing them to be adopted.

So, if you’re thinking of getting a pet, you don’t really have shell out over P10,000 for a pure bred dog or cats. Aspins (askals or asong pinoy) and cats adopted from PARC are just a loving and fun as their pure bred counterparts. Not to mention, it’ll make you feel happy, just knowing that you saved an innocent animal from a gruesome death on the streets.

To adopt a dog or cat from the PARC, visit this website for more details.
